The field maple tree grows to a height of less than 10 m, its crown of short, twiggy branches bearing dense green foliage, turning golden yellow in autumn. As with the species, 'Elsrijk' thrives best in a semi shade position, on a fertile, well-drained soil.
The bark is light brown and flaky, and twigs are slender and brown and develop a corky bark with age. Small, grey leaf buds grow on long stems. Field maples can grow to 20m and live for up to 350 years.
